What is an employment contract for permanent employees?

There are three broad categories to consider when it comes to employment contracts: temporary, fixed contract work and permanent. Temporary and fixed-term contracts clearly refer to assignments that will be in place for a limited period. Permanent contracts, on the other hand, have no such time limitations.

Permanent employees work to the terms stipulated within their permanent employment contract, wherein all of the terms regarding employment status, salary, working hours, annual leave and so on are laid out.

What does the law say about permanent employment contracts?

Under UK law, employees are entitled to a broad range of employment rights, all of which need to be stipulated in their contracts. These rights include but are not limited to the following:

  • adherence to the National Minimum Wage
  • paid holidays, as well as paid maternity and paternity leave
  • subsidised health care
  • the right to paid time off work in case of sickness (SSP)
  • the right to request a routine of flexible working hours
  • the right not to be discriminated against
  • pension contributions
